Open Realty

For those of you with custom sites, if you aren't using this program yet you probably should. Open-realty is an open source program, meaning you can install it free of charge. It’s written in php, and allows you to add an unlimited number of fields to listings, different types, upload multiple pictures or a virtual tour with minimal hassle. You can specify which fields are searchable and you can implement a sign up feature to allow visitors to signup as a member, save searches and get email notifications when new properties are added that match their saved search criteria. The design is search engine friendly as well and the interface is a WYSIYG editor with a template based system to allow for customization. You can customize title and Meta information on a per page basis.

The software has been around for a while and there are some commercial add-ons available now for the core product, a CSVLoader (allows you to import listings from CSV files, including images) and an IDXManager.  The IDXManager will import IDX listing data and photos into Open-Realty. The only stipulation in use is that you must leave in the html comment in the coding.  If you want to remove it, you'll need to buy a license for $250, which is very reasonable considering.  The program is available for download at http://www.open-realty.org/download.html. Your web host will need to support PHP 4.3 or higher, PHP GD Support or Imagemagik for thumbnail creation and MySQL or PostgreSQL for the latest version.

The software is constantly being updated and prior versions and revisions are listed on the site. Planned updates include full multilingual support.

Are there any members that currently use Open-Realty on their personal site?  Or have used it in the past and quit? -Charles

Charles,

I have never used it, but I am getting interested to do it, I hope that someone has experience on this.

Charles, that seems to be over my head.

I have downloaded it & began to look into some of the features but even though I consider myself pretty tech-savy I wasn't able to get everything going...maybe I didn't spend enough time with it...

I'm having a friend of mine put it up on his server so I can play with it. If it works like I think it will, I'm going to use it on my next site. -Charles

Hey Jaqueline, You wrote this post long ago. Did you end up using it on your site? I just came across it in my search for an open source IDX include...though it doesn't look like it is free at all. hmm

searching,

Mary Ann, we ended up using Drupal. Still transferring the old concent over, the new site should be live by the end of the month (fingers crossed). http://phoenixhomes.com uses the same backend.  Its really slick. -Charles

Help!  We are using open realty to list houses in our retirement community.  We have over 90 listings.  Do I have to put in each one by hand?  Is there a way to pull the information from MLS and just upload it?

Thanks

Well Charleen, did anyone help you or did all this just end? I wanted to know if one can upload from MLS.

Hi,

I recently posted a FSBO, or For Sale By Owner website through a local web builder using Open Realty, however there are several problems with the site that I cannot seem to get addressed, one being that I would like the home page to be set up differently, somewhat like the Autumn Candy, (I do not find the current page intuitive at all), and also would like to address the users of the site as anything but "Agents", which they seem to find confusing, but do not know how.

As well, I would like to be able to allow separate advertising on the site, such as Lawyers, Appraisers, Home Inspectors, etc.

Do I have to scrap the site and start again with another program or is there a simpler fix?

Regards,

Lyle

Hmm...it may be something that you'll need to have a programmer fix. Have you tried going to some of the forums that discuss the program? Personally I like Drupal, our site www.lvrealty.net runs on it and it is very flexible. Your best bet would be to find a open realty community and find an expert on the program. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. -Charles
